TRXio: Accurate Inventory Management Software

We Take Software Accuracy Seriously

“Accuracy” is defined as, “the degree to which the result of a measurement, calculation, or specification conforms to the correct value or a standard.” (Dictionary.com). In the software sector, accuracy is especially critical since businesses rely heavily on their software systems to keep operations running smoothly. Software errors can halt production, interrupt productivity and even lead to financial loss.

What Can a Software Error Cause?

The US Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NSIT) estimates that software bugs cost the American economy an estimated $59 billion every year, along with approximately 0.6 percent of the gross domestic product.

Software errors can be disastrous. Here are a few large scale examples of the problems software errors can cause.

  • In 2011, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia had a software glitch that caused ATMs to overpay its customers.

  • In February 1998, a software failure interrupted the New York Mercantile Exchange and telephone service to several East Coast cities

  • In 2015, it was discovered that 3,200 US prisoner terms were miscalculated due to a software glitch. On average, prisoners were being released 49 days early.

  • In 1962, incorrect coding caused the Mariner 1 to veer of its intended flight path, costing $18.5 million.

Why is Software Prone to Errors?

There are many factors that contribute to software errors, including growing complexity in coding, human errors in application programming, limited liability with software companies, limited testing and oversights during the development process.

How to Prevent Software Errors

Software providers need to make significant investments into the software development process. The best way to prevent software errors is to hire a quality, in-house developer  who can perform tests, utilizing testing tools, suites, scripts, metrics, and that can continuously monitor a software system for errors. Developers need to always check the code for typos and programming errors.
